The Secret Circle Episode 10 : Darkness

The tenth episode of The Secret Circle was aired January 5, 2012 at The CW Network after 26 days since the ninth episode aired in November 10 last year. The audience is once again thrilled by the revelations in this episode about Cassie's dark magic, it's origin and what she can be capable of with it.

At the onset of the episode Darkness, Cassie was awaken by a noise from her bedroom door. To her surprise, Jake came out of the dark hallway wearing that mysterious smirk on his face. Jake came to see her to warn her about her dark magic being uncontrollable because it's in her blood and she can't do anything about it. He offers help but instead Cassie closed her mind thinking that Jake is somewhat branding her as "evil".
Enraged by the fact that her power came from her evil ancestor, Francis Balcoin, she pushed Jake away and used her power to kill him. Jake started to choke and blood came rushing out of his mouth as Cassie stares at him merciless. Then...she woke up! Pretty nasty huh? I also thought when i watched this part there's no way Jake's gonna die that fast and just like that. Well, teasers are always good in a series to make more action and suspense.

Going back to the story, Cassie seeks for help to fully understand dark magic as she talks to Adam about it and asked him to keep the secret from anyone else including their circle. What she doesn't know is that when triggered by anger, hate and strong emotions her dark magic manifests. She almost killed Adam when she saw him telling Diana about the secret she asked him to keep. This was the same choking thing that Cassie did to Jake in her nightmare and now she did this for real to Adam. She apologized to the entire circle and left.

Coming in to Chance Harbor is Diana's grandmother and Charles' mother Kate who pretends to be checking up on Diana and Charles but in fact wants to check up on Cassie. She confronted Dawn and warns her about the strange things going on in the town because Kate knew she's behind these somehow.

A little bit startled with this Dawn asked Charles to deal with her mother and Charles already thought what Dawn wants to eliminate his mother which he didn't agree with.

On the other hand, Faye is very preoccupied by finding a way how to strengthen her power so she turned into a voodoo priest to do a ritual. And she did by coming to a guy who she didn't know was fake until after the ritual when she was trying her powers and nothing happened. She went back to him, enraged by what he did. When the guy realized that Faye is really a witch he then told her that he can help her.

As this happens, we now see Cassie in the woods with Kate in front of a wooden coffin covered with a white cloth with a symbol. She told Cassie before they came there that she can sense the dark magic in her and she knows how to expel it from her. Without second thoughts, Cassie agreed only thinking not to harm her friends or anyone anymore. What she didn't know was what Diana discovered about her grandmother...she's a witch hunter! She found mandrake root, which is normally used to kill witches, in her grandmother's luggage. Diana and Adam rushed to the woods to save Cassie.

As Kate performs the ritual, she then seals Cassie in the wooden coffin marked by her blood to let her body die as it was the only way to remove the dark magic she possess. Really frightened of the situation trying to suck out the life from her, she used her magic to escape. Adam and Diana came just as the coffin exploded. Now, this part is I think a little lame in killing a witch. Sealing someone in a coffin and not six feet under the ground is of course another easy way to escape. Her scream can be heard from outside and the circle will be able to find her.

Kate tries to hurry out of the town upon discovering that the only way to measure how strong Cassie's power is by putting her in a desperate situation like dying. When she was confronted by her son, she told Charles that Cassie was the one they're looking for to get the good and evil in balance. She also warned him that she knows he's part of Henry's murder and Jane Blake's unexplained memory mishap and that he has to act according to what is right and not just blindly following Dawn's orders.

As this episode comes to an end, Diana asks Cassie how did it feel like when she almost died tonight. Cassie said that the whole thing was horrible but when she escaped death by having the dark magic in her, she said she was lucky and that it felt good to have it. The best part of this episode is at the first parts of the episode, Cassie made an attraction spell to get Jake back to town because she needs him to understand her dark magic and it seems like he's the only one who can. And outside Diana's window in the dark, Jake is mysteriously looking up at Cassie!
